FROM THE PRINCIPAL – ROYAL COLLEGE
The
unbroken Royal - Thomian series has now reached the significant 125th milestone
on the path of both schools' progress in sport and should therefore have a very
special place in the hearts of the cricketers and spectators alike.
The
Royal - Thomian Match - a byword in Sri Lanka's parlance of sport - has
continuously emphasised all that is best in inter -school encounters with its
hallmark of friendly rivalry and has taught many a Royalist and Thomian that
what matters is not whether the game is won or lost but how and in what spirit
it is played. This indeed is a lesson for life as much as are the many other
norms taught and learned on the playing fields.
With all the
arrangements made to celebrate the event and the excitement it has generated, I
have no doubt this particular Match will go down in history as an exceptional
encounter between Royal and S. Thomas' marked by an accentuation of all the
usual characteristics of the Big Match.
I
wish both teams the best of luck and the spectators a better demonstration of
schoolboy cricket than they have ever seen before.
